For decades it has been debated whether fats or carbohydrates are responsible for obesity. Ecological research on animals from insects to primates suggested we should not be asking which nutrient is responsible, but how different nutrient mixturesinfluence energy intake. Using a mixture approach from ecology, Nutritional Geometry, research on humans, including children, showed that the percentage energy from protein plays a surprisingly important role, via a mechanism called Protein Leverage.
